Good News of Great Joy

By on December 20, 2015

The Angel’s Announcement
Over 2,000 years ago, an angel spoke to some shepherds, “I bring you good news of great joy for everyone!” The shepherds were, of course, stunned and had no real understanding. However, they were so excited, they left the fields and went to find the baby Jesus who had been born in Bethlehem.

Good News
So exactly what is this “good news of great joy?” To many, Christmas is simply a season where we are extra kind, give gifts and tend to be in a very forgiving mood. While that certainly is good news and brings a measure of joy, it’s not what the angel had in mind.

In reality, the good news is the beginning of the most powerful story in the history of the world. It is the announcement of a baby named Jesus who became the Savior of the world. This Savior launched the greatest rescue operation Planet Earth has ever seen.

We (humanity) are the objects of the rescue. We’ve been trapped under an evil foe (Satan) who was/is determined to destroy us. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the enemy has been defeated. We have been set free to live like God originally intended for His children to live.

Great Joy
The joy referenced in this verse is realized when we understand what Jesus Christ really did. In His “finished work” on the cross of Calvary, He completely opened the path for us to be reconnected with our Father. For those of us who believe, our Father has opened His arms and begun to pour out His many benefits on us as His children.

We receive cleansing from our sins, healing for our bodies, deliverance from demonic spirits, prosperity beyond what we could comprehend, and eternal life. What’s more, it’s not something simply for the future—it begins the moment we believe. In fact, this story is so good, we struggle to believe that it is all by grace. What a gift our Father has given us!

More than a Baby
As Christians, we love the Christmas story. It truly is the beginning of the greatest story every told. While we enjoy the birth, we enjoy Jesus’ life, death, resurrection and His ascendancy into heaven even more.

It is the complete work of Jesus Christ that gives us the opportunity to live in great joy. That’s why the angel could say, “I bring you good news of great joy for everyone.” This offer is indeed for everyone who will believe that it truly happened. Are you experiencing this great joy?

Hi and welcome! I'm Happy. My wife Dianne and I are the founders of the Vineyard Church of Central Illinois, a multi-site church with 6 campus locations. Over the last 30+ years, I have learned alot about leadership in life and leading a church. I have made some mistakes and had some successes. I look forward to sharing the wisdom I have learned with you. I strive everyday to see Jesus as bigger, better, and more beautiful. And I am wholeheartedly committed to the ministry Jesus promised his followers in John 14:12: to be able to do the same and greater works through the power of the Holy Spirit.
